Really badly formatted submission

I was playing last Friday night and raised with aces pre-flop. The flop was J 5 3 and I bet. The turn was an 8 and I bet again. The river was a K and I checked. The other guy shoved and I called. Did I play this okay?

Badly formatted submission

I was playing a cash game last Friday night, and it was a really crazy game. I raised with aces from up front and got two calls. The flop was J 5 3 with no flush draw and I bet big and one player called. He was pretty bad, calling down a lot. The turn was a 8 and I bet big again and the player called. The river was a K, I checked, he shoved, and I called. Do you think I played this okay?

Good Question

I was playing in a 1/2 cash game at a casino last Friday night, and it was an active game with lots of multiway pots. I raised to $15 from under the gun with red aces and got two calls, one from the button and one from the big blind. I didn’t have any reads on the big blind, but the button was definitely a loose, passive player. He liked to see a lot of flops and played pretty straightforward post flop.

The flop was J 5 3 with no flush draw and I bet $35 and only the button called. I thought he could have a J, but possibly other one pair hands too. The turn was a 8, I bet $80 and the button called. At this point I thought it was pretty likely he had a J. The river was a K, and I decided to check. I thought maybe the K would be too scary to him and I wouldn’t get him to call, but I’m not sure if maybe I should have bet. The button shoved for $140 after I checked, and I wasn’t sure what he had, so I called. Do you think I played this okay? What hands do you think the button would shove on the river? Should I have checked or bet myself?

Really Good Question

Some background on me: I usually play live 1/2 no limit, but I used to play up to 50nl online. I have been a break even player for several years, and recently have been working on my game. I feel like I’m playing better than ever, but am not a proven winner yet.

The games I play in are casino games, and the standard player is passive, plays a lot of hands preflop, and can’t fold if they make any kind of hand postflop. I have only been tracking my time for about 400 hours, and I’m winning at about $5/hour. I feel like in general I’m good at playing tight preflop, and betting my strong hands to get people to call with worse hands. But I struggle with getting away from hands sometimes, and I’m often not sure what the other guy has. Here’s a hand I played last Friday night in a standard casino 1/2 game:

I raised to $15 from under the gun with red aces and got two calls, one from the button and one from the big blind. I didn’t have any reads on the big blind since he was new to the table and this was his first hand, but the button was a loose, passive player. He’s a regular who I’ve played with at least a few times. He likes to see a lot of flops and plays pretty straightforward post flop. I don’t really know all the hands he could have here, but he’s probably reraising with aces, kings, and queens. He could have all other pocket pairs, broadway hands, and definitely a lot of speculative suited hands, but I’m not sure just how many. The big blind started the hand with $200, the button had a bit under $300, and I covered both of them with my stack of $400.

The flop came out J 5 3 with no flush draw possible. I bet $35 and only the button called. I thought he could have a J, but possibly other one pair hands too. I don’t know if he would call here with just ace high but I kind of doubt it? The turn was an 8, I bet $80 and the button called again. At this point I thought it was pretty likely he had a J rather than an underpair, but again I’m not sure just how much he is calling here.
